  • Bishop Jonathan opens therapeutic learning centre

    The bishop opened a new centre in Charter Academy that will offer students help with their social, emotional and mental health. It will bear his name as ‘The Jonathan Centre’, and aims to offer a programme of therapeutic interventions that all students can access. Read more

  • Project to get families chatting is launched

    Our education team is working with churches, families and schools on a project designed to get children talking about faith. Parents are using a selection of books that can normally be found in school libraries to kickstart those conversations about important issues. This ‘Chatting Faith’ project is happening across Portsmouth and Winchester dioceses and is part of the national C of E’s Growing Faith initiative. Read more

  • Island school welcomes Bishop Jonathan

    Bishop Jonathan met staff and pupils on a visit to The Bay C of E School in Sandown, on the Isle of Wight. He was given a tour of the secondary school site and was quizzed by pupils on a variety of subjects. Read more

  • School leavers say farewell at cathedral service

    Eleven-year-olds who are preparing to leave their church schools came to special Leavers’ Services in our cathedral. The children, from across the diocese, took part in workshops including singing, re-enacting the Coronation and creating prayer pyramids. They then joined in African drumming as part of a special service led by Bishop Jonathan. Read more

  • Church leads regular worship group in school

    Volunteers from St Barnabas Church in Swanmore lead ‘Worship Wonders’ – a lunchtime group introducing children to the Christian faith in their local school. Dozens of children sing, pray and learn together. The church has also launched a group for parents, babies and toddlers, meaning it's at the forefront of our developing work with children and young people. Read more

  • Island children act out the Coronation service

    Children from Bembridge C of E Primary School acted out the Coronation service during an act of collective worship in their school. Five-year-old Freddie and four-year-old Blossom played the parts of King Charles and Queen Camilla, two days ahead of the real thing Read more

  • Bishop helps to open new island school

    Bishop Jonathan helped to officially open the new Freshwater and Yarmouth C of E Primary School. The £4.5m building was created as a purpose-built school for pupils from across West Wight. The official opening included an act of collective worship led by pupils throughout the school. Read more

  • Schools take part in Lights of Hope project

    Church schools across our diocese were involved with a project based on a ‘Light of Hope’ art installation, which was suspended above Winchester Cathedral’s nave between October and January. It inspired pupils across Hampshire to create their own miniature lights of hope. Read more

  • Ryde pupils prove themselves to be global citizens

    Pupils from Oakfield C of E Primary School in Ryde have shown they have what it takes to be global citizens. They’ve worked hard on projects such as recycling, beach cleans and welcoming Ukrainian refugees. Read more

  • ‘Sunday School prompted me to join church school’

    It was partly Sharon James’s experience of teaching at Sunday School in her church that prompted her to teach in a church school. Now, after 17 years at St Alban’s C of E Primary in West Leigh, she’s pleased she made that choice. Read more
