Children’s Week celebrates 50th anniversary
Around 70 children from Soberton, Newtown and beyond enjoyed Children’s Week, based at Soberton Village Recreation Ground. It was the 50th anniversary of the annual event, and the vicar who first dreamt it up, the Rev Roger Moseley, was back to see how it had developed since its inception. Read more

Bishop Jonathan has appointed the Rev Andy Davis as interim Priest-in-Charge of Swanmore, Soberton, Newtown and Hambledon, and the Meon Bridge benefice. He’ll be in charge of a team of clergy and lay people who will minister in those parishes. He was born and raised in the Meon Valley, so will be returning home. Read more

The fascinating history that links Portsmouth’s ‘Circus Church’ and a modern church on a Fareham housing estate will be explored this Sunday. Self-confessed geek Charlie Stevenson will explain how a popular Victorian church on the site of a former circus eventually became St John the Evangelist Church in Fareham, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Called as a teenager to serve God
Richard Shurmer was an RE teacher for 36 years and has been a Reader for 37 years. He’s now responding to God’s call to be ordained. He’ll be one of seven people ordained deacon as part of our first Michaelmas cohort of ordinands. Bishop Jonathan will ordain him in our cathedral on September 30. Read more

Matt Gatt has been appointed as Pioneer Minster in the parish of South Gosport. He’ll be based at St John’s Church, Forton, with the plan to reestablish a worshipping community there, as well as working with young adults and creatives in the area. Read more

Senior teacher among those being ordained
Senior teacher Clare King fitted in her ordination training around a busy job leading a school department. Now she’s one of seven people preparing to be ordained by Bishop Jonathan at our Michaelmas ordination service on September 30. She’ll be serving in Holy Trinity Church, Bembridge, where she’s already part of the congregation. Read more

Bishop Jonathan met staff and pupils on a visit to The Bay C of E School in Sandown, on the Isle of Wight. He was given a tour of the secondary school site and was quizzed by pupils on a variety of subjects. Read more

in GeneralChurch celebrates first baptisms by immersion
Hope Church, Whiteley, celebrated their first ever baptisms by immersion over the summer. Three children, one young person and one adult were baptised in a paddling pool outside Cornerstone C of E Primary School, where the church now meets regularly. Among those baptised by the vicar, the Rev Amy Adeniran, was her own daughter, Talitha, aged six. Read more

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, will visit our diocese for three days in October. His focus will be on mission, sharing the good news of Jesus and visiting churches, schools and communities across south-east Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. He'll be visiting over the weekend of October 13-15, spending one day and night on the Isle of Wight and two days on the mainland. Read more

The new benefice will consist of five churches – All Saints, St John’s, St Michael’s in Ryde, as well as Holy Cross, Binstead, and St Peter’s, Havenstreet.
