    The Rev Jo-Anne Newton was one of those ordained deacon at a special service in our cathedral this summer. She joins her brother, the Rev Jonathan Jeffery, who was first ordained in 1997 and is now vicar of Leigh Park and Warren Park. It’s not the only family link in this year’s ordination services.   • Bishop Jonathan launches national ‘Flourish’ initiative

    Bishop Jonathan led the national launch of the new ‘Flourish’ initiative, which aims to create a series of worshipping communities in schools and colleges. Our diocese is one of 12 that will pilot the idea over the next two years. Four of our schools will work in partnership with local churches to create voluntary groups meeting at lunchtime or after-school groups to discover more about the Christian faith. Read more

  • Six new priests ordained in special service

    Bishop Jonathan ordained six new priests in a special service in our cathedral. The six, who had previously been ordained as deacons last year, were anointed with oil to symbolise their new role. And priests from across our diocese and beyond joined the bishop in laying hands on them. Read more

  • Five-year-old has feet washed during ordination service

    Bishop Jonathan ordained 18 new deacons and six new priests at two service in our cathedral. All of the deacons had their feet washed, to symbolise their new role as servants of others. Bishop Jonathan also washed the feet of five-year-old Lucas Ashworth, alongside his newly-ordained mum Emily. Read more

  • Island students heading for Taize

    Students from The Bay C of E School and Christ the King College on the Isle of Wight are heading for a visit to the Taize Community in France with Bishop Jonathan. They'll experience prayer, worship and the chance to live in community with thousands of other young people at this Christian centre of pilgrimage. Read more

  • Refugee Week 2024 launched at our cathedral

    Our cathedral hosted the local launch of Refugee Week 2024, with an evening of colour, food and music. The event included performances by those who had sought refuge and asylum in this country, and celebrated the contributions they make to our life and culture. Read more
