WHEN Margaret Bower and Serena Meah first encountered Christ Church, Sandown, they were suffering. Both can now say their lives have been transformed.
They were both among a dozen enquirers on the church’s recent Alpha Course, which offered food, friendship and conversations about faith. Now they are thrilled to be at church each Sunday.
Margaret first came across Christ Church in 2023, a few months after her daughter Lisa died unexpectedly. She had already lost her husband during the Covid pandemic and felt devastated.
“I lost my sense of purpose, wasn’t talking to anyone and felt like a zombie,” she said. “I was in a bad place. In November 2023, I walked past Christ Church and saw a sign saying it was a ‘warm space’. I plucked up the courage to go inside and Tiena the churchwarden met me. I decided to come on the Sunday morning and have been coming ever since.
“The Alpha Course was brilliant for me, and I gained so much from the videos that explained all the background, and by talking to others. We went to Carisbrooke Priory for the away day and I now volunteer there in the tea room.
“When my husband was ill, we used to go to another church where the worship was more formal. So I’d never known anything else. But here it is different, more informal in a way that helps you to interact. Sunday morning now feels like home. I’ve now joined a home group, where you can also talk about what really matters to people who care.”
Meanwhile Serena had moved to the Isle of Wight from Southampton after a relationship broke down. She walks from Shanklin to Sandown every Monday, and one day she saw a notice outside the church saying: ‘Dogs welcome’.
”My dog Vinni is important to me, as I suffer from anxiety and he is like a therapy dog,” she said. “I stroke him and it calms me down. I saw this sign, went in and met people who said they were running an Alpha Course that night. It included dinner, so I went along. I met a lovely bunch of people and felt very welcome.
“I’d done Alpha before but never completed it, as I get very tired, especially in the evenings. But when I went into the church I felt so comfortable, as if I’d come home. I’d always been a Christian but struggled with aspects of faith.
“I’d been blaming God, but the Alpha Course gave me the headspace to realise that things aren’t God’s fault – he gives humans free will and they hurt each other.
“One big thing was feeling an overwhelming sense of the Holy Spirit on the away day at Carisbrooke Priory. I felt a real peace. And recently I’ve thought: I can’t remember the last time I was anxious – I used to feel anxiety every day. I also don’t feel lonely. The people here are genuinely pleased to see you.
“I knew I was happier, but couldn’t work out why. And of course people had prayed for me. I’ve learnt to put God first. People have been shocked at how much I’ve changed.”

Another member of the Alpha Course at Christ Church was Rita Rose. Her husband died 18 months ago. She was also walking past Christ Church and felt moved to go into a midweek group.
“They suggested an Alpha group as a place where I could get a deeper understanding,” she said. “I met people there with similar experiences, and there was some great food. Sunday mornings are very different from what they used to be. People are able to help each other, and I find it very easygoing.”
The Alpha Courses run by Christ Church Sandown include food, the chance to watch a video outlining an aspect of the Christian faith, and then discussion in small groups. A handful of attendees on this occasion came from nearby St Paul's Church, Shanklin, or elsewhere on the island. Find out more here.
The recent course there was one of 14 Alpha Courses around the diocese that were given small grants by the diocese’s Evangelism Fund.
Paul Corbett, who is a Reader and who leads the Alpha Course at Christ Church, said: “Nearly everyone on the course were new attendees at church or were friends of those who were. All do now attend. There was definitely a deepening of the faith of each individual on the course. We saw one person healed on the course and another is very near to committing their life to Christ.
“Others understood better what is to follow Jesus and grew in their understanding of the Christian faith. There was deep sharing during the course with several admitting to difficult personal relationships. We were able to pray about these situations and continue to do so.”
