New Lead for Revitalise to support parish mission
THE Rev Andrew Axon has been appointed as our new Lead for Revitalise – helping us to implement our diocese’s rejuvenate strategy.
Andrew is currently vicar of two commuter rural villages in West Kent, just south of Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells, as well as area dean. His new role will include working with churches as they devise pathways for unchurched people to become disciples.
The Revitalise strand is just part of our diocese’s strategy, which aims to create a Jesus-centred, Kingdom-seeking community of disciples. It includes plans to enhance ministry with children and young people, as well as specific projects in Paulsgrove and in Choir Church projects across the diocese. It's expected he will start work in our diocese on May 1.
Andrew said: “I am delighted to be coming to the Diocese of Portsmouth as the new Lead for Revitalise. It’s a varied role that will include working with churches to support growth, nurturing existing and emerging leaders and being part of the diocesan team providing missional funding to parishes and bidding for funding from the national church.
“It is a fabulous role, and I cannot wait to get started. I am a complete newcomer to Hampshire, slightly more familiar with the Isle of Wight, but very much open to meeting new colleagues, finding my way around and accepting invitations for pub lunches!”
Originating from Lancashire, he left for university in Wales and early working life with a charity working with disabled adults, before working for a mortgage company and investment bank in Cheltenham.
Andrew trained for ordination at Trinity College Bristol before serving a rural curacy in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds. A first incumbency in a large suburban village three miles south of Nottingham was followed by ministry in Gloucester City that would include a Bishop’s Mission Order to a large housing development.
He has been vicar of St Mary’s, Lamberhurst and St Luke’s, Matfield, since 2016 and also served the Diocese of Rochester in a variety of additional roles. He is currently completing a part-time professional doctorate in Practical Theology at Roehampton University, which includes researching about clergy burnout and a practical theology of joy.
He is an experienced teacher and trainer who enjoys opportunities to talk, reflect and think about contemporary life matters with others. Since 2023 he has led leadership seminars on burnout for several groups working in health, education and the church.
Andrew is married to Claire, a senior manager and safeguarding expert working for NHS England. Claire spent her early years near Portsmouth and looks forward to getting to know her birthplace better. They have a blended family that includes ten children, ranging in age from late 20s to a five-year-old. Andrew shares a passion for sports with many of the family that includes basketball, ice hockey, field hockey and football.
