Teenagers ride the waves on surfing holiday
TEENAGERS from St Jude’s Church in Southsea learnt how to ride the waves on a surfing holiday organised by their youth leaders.
Eleven young people aged 15-20 and six leaders headed to North Devon for ‘Surf Camp’, sleeping in a local church hall and travelling down to the beach each morning.
For the teenagers, who normally meet for Bible study, worship and prayer each Sunday evening, it was a chance to deepen friendships and learn a new skill. They were taught by professional instructors on dry land and then in the sea at Saunton Sands, a popular surfing venue.
The idea for the four-day surfing holiday was dreamt up by the church’s youth worker Jack Cross, who has surfed himself at this beach before. It was jointly organised by St Jude’s and local Christian charity Spirit in Sport.
Almost all of the young people who came had never surfed before, and almost all of them managed to stand on their surfboards on the first day. As the trip continued, they were able to venture further from the shore and try out more complex skills.
One evening involved playing frisbee and football on the beach during a glorious sunset. The final morning included a scavenger hunt when teams were challenged to buy the most unusual or hilarious item in the town, using just £2.
Sullivan Goodwin, 18, said: “I really enjoyed the surfing, It was great to try it out and I loved being with these friends.”
And Faith Clarke, 16, said: “It was an incredible opportunity to embrace nature and bond with members of church youth whilst gaining new experiences of surfing.”
