Five-year-old has feet washed during ordination service
FIVE-YEAR-OLD Lucas Ashworth had his feet washed by the bishop alongside his mum Emily during an ordination service in our cathedral.
Emily was one of 18 candidates who were ordained as deacon, following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather, who were also ordained. Her dad, Canon Tom Kennar, is rector of St Faith’s, Havant.
The service includes a powerful symbolic moment, when the bishop places a towel around his waist and washes the feet of those who he has just ordained as deacon. It replicates what Jesus did to his disciples at the Last Supper, and also symbolises the humility the new deacons should show, in their new roles.
And when he came to wash Emily’s feet, Lucas was keen that it should happen to him too. Bishop Jonathan, accompanied by the Rev Kate Macfarlane, made sure his feet were washed in exactly the same way as everyone else’s were.
Emily said: “Lucas happens to have autism, so I’m not surprised that he wanted to be involved in what was going on. They got a chair so he could sit next to me in the service. I explained that the bishop was just about to wash my feet and he just said ‘Me too’. It was a really nice thing to do.”
It was the first of two ordination services on Saturday. In the afternoon, six clergy who had been ordained deacon last year were ordained as priests.
The ordination service included the largest number of candidates for many years, with those who have studied on the Portsmouth Pathway alongside those from residential theological colleges and those who are part of the ‘Michaelmas cohort’.
After being presented for ordination to the bishop by the Director of Portsmouth Pathway, the Rev Richard Wyld, and the Diocesan Director of Ordinands, Canon Peter Hall, they each made solemn promises about their future discipleship, ministry and conduct. The Ven Kathryn Percival, who had led the pre-ordination retreat, preached – talking about the unusual kind of ‘club’ they were about to join.
Bishop Jonathan placed his hands on the heads of each of the candidates in turn, praying for the Holy Spirit to be sent down upon each of them. The Bishop, the Dean and the Archdeacon of the Meon then washed the candidates’ feet. Bishop Jonathan also washed the feet of his fellow bishops.
The Archdeacons then placed a stole over the left shoulder of each of the newly-ordained deacons, to symbolise their new ministry as servants in the Church. They then stood behind the altar as Bishop Jonathan celebrated Communion before processing out of the west door alongside their new training incumbents. These incumbents will help the newly-ordained deacons to understand parish ministry as they work as assistant curates.
