TWO sisters were baptised during the regular Messy Church service at St John’s Church, Ryde.
It was the first ever Messy Baptism at the church – Nina Hunnybun, aged seven, and Bethany, aged four, were baptised by team vicar the Rev David Morgan. Nina and Bethany have been regulars at Messy Church for the past two years, so it made sense to baptise them in the worship setting they are familiar with.
David used the portable font bowl, which was designed and painted by pupils from Oakfield C of E Primary School, on a bespoke oak stand, which was designed and crafted by former churchwarden David Rowe and his father John.
A team of volunteers from St John’s Church run these monthly Messy Church services, headed up by Sarah Rowe, a teacher at Oakfield Primary and Becca Overy, the Ryde Area Youth For Christ worker.

The theme for this session of Messy Church was ‘Who is the Holy Spirit?’. Families made doves, kites, windmills, mini birthday cakes and had a go at blow painting – all these activities representing the symbols of the Holy Spirit. There was also a delicious party tea!
Messy Church has been an area of growth for St John’s, which worshippers now hope to build on with their newly-formed clergy team. Messy Church will pause for the summer, but begin again in September.
