Animals at heart of Christmas celebrations
FAMILIES are being invited to meet some of the animals at the heart of the Nativity story in the run-up to Christmas.
Worshippers from our churches are offering the chance to meet sheep, goats and donkeys that might have been in the stable when Jesus was born more than 2,000 years ago. Some are re-enacting the story of Jesus’s birth itself.
Actors from the Havant Passion Play group will tell the Nativity story in 15-minute performances for visitors at Staunton Country Park from December 18-22. They’ll stage the re-enactment inside the barn at the farm, surrounded by some of the animals from the farm. It’s free of charge for those visiting the farm, and will happen at 11:30am and 1pm on December 18, 20, 21 and 22; and at 2pm only on Sunday 19 December.
Animals will also be central at the family fun day at Holy Rood Church, Stubbington, on December 4. The church and hall will be open from 2pm-4:30pm for families to meet animals from the Nativity stable, create Christingles and take part in short Christingle services at 3pm or 4pm. Details here.
And there will also be animals at the Christmas Festival at St Faith’s Church, Lee-on-Solent, on December 11 between 10am and 2pm. As well as craft and gift stalls, live music and entertainment, a tombola and raffle, and festive refreshments, there’s also a Live Nativity event. Families will be invited to experience the Nativity story in the church’s desert tent and stable, with the chance to stroke animals, and take photos. The Live Nativity element of the day costs £5 per family. Details here.
There will be a real donkey at the Crib Services at St Simon's Church, Southsea, on Christmas Eve. They happen at 2pm and 4pm. Find out more here.
And the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary will be holding its regular carol service on December 11 and 12 this year. Singers from local schools are expected to join around 100 people at each of the two services – at 2:30pm each day.
