The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Rowan Williams, has sent a message of sympathy and support to the people of Asia and parts of Africa affected by the devastation caused by Sunday's earthquake.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Rowan Williams celebrated Eucharist at Canterbury Cathedral on 29 December to mark St Thomas a Beckett day. Prayers were offered throughout the day for the victims of the Tsunami in Asia (Rosenthal/Anglican World)

In a personal letter to Anglican leaders in the region Archbishop Rowan said: "This tragedy has had a devastating impact in Asia; it is also felt here in Britain and across the world. Every life lost is a personal tragedy for each family and our hearts go out to the bereaved and injured. The hardship caused by this devastation will be a challenge to many and will require the help and support of the world community. You are all very much in my thoughts and prayers at this time."
