Funeral scam warning
Clergy and Readers were warned earlier this month about a conman who had contacted parishes with a scam about a family funeral in Jersey (or somewhere similar) and asked for money for a ferry ticket. Since then he has been quite active in our diocese, with varying success. Click here for further details, including a warning to call the police if he approaches anyone in your parish.
Back to Church Sunday continues to have a significant impact - not only does it see tens of thousands of people come back to church on one Sunday in September, but it also sees many becoming regular attenders and active members of their local churches. As registrations open for 2012, the Archbishop of Canterbury has called Back to Church Sunday "essential". Click here for more details, including how your church can take part.

Ride and Stride - Saturday 8 September
This is an annual, national event which involves cyclists and walkers seeking sponsorship for visiting participating churches in the local area. The money raised is used to support the region's historic churches and chapels. Last year, around 350 churches from Hampshire took part, raising £50,000. Please help to increase participation, and have your church open to meet and greet. You might also encourage someone to ride or stride on your church's behalf. Click here for more details, including how to take part.

Call for Tigger Stories!
Too often, like Eeyore, we only share gloomy stories about the Church. But we know that the Church is full of good news stories – ‘Tigger stories’. They put a spring in our step! Every day, Christians in parishes across the country are living out the Gospel in a wide range of ways. The Stewardship Office would like to hear your 'Tigger stories'. Email a couple of paragraphs and photos and they’ll publish the best each month on www.parishresources.org.uk. Click here for further details. Please also forward your stories to Neil Pugmire, for use in the Pompey Chimes.
Fight the VAT hike
You may be aware that the government wants VAT to be charged at 20% on alterations to listed churches. Read more about our diocesan campaign against this 'heritage tax' that would send the costs of church improvements soaring. For those of you who have already watched the amusing VAT Ditty from Wakefield Cathedral, protesting about VAT on listed building alterations, here is the Sequel. You can do your bit by signing the petition asking for VAT to be scrapped on repairs to church buildings. If just 10 people in each listed church sign, it will hit 125,000. Click here to sign.
Click here for details of the many training courses offered by the communications team at Church House. All courses are subsided for CofE churches and charities.
